History of Llay Welfare Cricket Club
The club was first founded in 1921 but did not play at the current pitch (The Ring) until the early 30’s but played at the Chain which was located opposite the Crown in Llay. The club has played in various leagues as follows:
- Wrexham League, which was disbanded
- Flintshire league in the early 70’s
- NWCL at present.
Our first silverware in this league was in 1977 when we won the division 4.
Over the years we have had players play at County level and in the past 10 years we hosted County games at the Ring.
We have two teams in division 1 and 4 with captains Dave Phennah and Steve Partington respectively. This year we are in the Welsh Cup and Les Tunnah knockout competitions and also we have a team in the Chester mid week league, which enables us to bring some of our youngsters on. This year we have attracted a large number of youngsters to our training night on Fridays 6.00-pm to 7.30pm run under the supervision of John Lloyd. We are running an under 9’s and 13’s teams. Any girl or boy wishing to join please contact John on 01978 854883.
The Welfare itself in the coming years is having floodlit areas, new drainage and an all weather pitch.

On Monday 14th July work started on the refurbishment of the rear of Llay Miners Welfare. This will consist of securing the roof, guttering, rendering, balustrade and will also include the removal, restoration and replacement of the original windows in the upstairs function room and will match the work that has previously been carried out on the rest of the building thus securing the future of the Grade 2 listed building for many years to come.
