Refurbishment
Llay Welfare was built in 1929 and is a grade 2 listed building. As with any such building the upkeep is continuous and this has been one of the main priorities of the Trustees.
Over the past 5 years refurbishment of the front of the building, to include new windows and specialist treatment to the sandstone balustrade has been completed with funds provided by the WDA.In connection with the One Stop Shop project the land fill tax credit scheme has provided useful funds to tarmac the car park and recently, to comply with the disability act, to install a lift so that the disabled may attend and enjoy the entertainment facilities of the first floor cabaret room.
Thanks to the Community Facilities and activities Programme grant funds have been forthcoming to refurbish both the ground floor and first floor corridors to include new carpet and redecoration, install an invalid toilet on the first floor, rewiring of the electrical system to facilitate a computer room, new CCTV cameras, a new state of the art alarm system and refurbishment of the managers office. The total amount provided by the three funders is £380k but the Trustees are still continuously looking at funding opportunities as there is a great deal of work still to be done to keep the building up to scratch.
Anyone who knows the Welfare is aware of the extensive grounds by way of two bowling greens, a football pitch and a cricket pitch. The cricket and football pitches suffer from water logging at times of heavy rain and whilst the bowling greens are in pristine condition work is needed to the surrounding paths. In addition the pavilion, which is also grade 11 listed needs major renovation and plans are also on the drawing board to build a multi use games area.
Having been quite successful in obtaining funding for the inside of the building the trustees are now concentrating their efforts on the outside and are quite hopeful that some of the project funding will be obtained.
It is a continuous battle but one the Trustees are determined to win.
